The verdict, in one line
Yes — the drone itself flies, and TSA allows the aircraft in both carry-on and checked bags. But the drone is the easy part; the constraint is its lithium (LiPo) batteries. Spare batteries must go in your carry-on only, never checked, under the same watt-hour limits as any lithium cell. The right move: carry the whole rig — drone and batteries — in the cabin, with the batteries out of the drone and their terminals protected.
The drone body: allowed, cabin preferred
TSA explicitly permits drones in carry-on and checked baggage — the frame, camera, gimbal, and controller face no special screening rule. In practice, carry it on. Checked bags take drops, crushing, and temperature and pressure swings that damage delicate gimbals and LiPo cells, and a lost checked bag means a lost drone. The only reason to check the body is size: a large drone may exceed carry-on dimensions, and whether it fits is airline- and aircraft-dependent, not a TSA rule.
At the checkpoint, expect to remove the drone from your bag for X-ray like any large electronic (PreCheck and CT-scanner lanes may let you leave it in). An officer can also ask you to power it on, so keep it charged enough to boot.
The batteries are the real rule
Drone batteries are lithium-polymer (a form of lithium-ion), and they follow the same FAA rules as every spare lithium cell: spare batteries are banned from checked baggage and must be carried in the cabin, accessible. Only a battery installed in the drone may technically ride in checked baggage — but since your spares can’t, and the drone belongs in the cabin anyway, keep everything together up top. Allowed sizes:

Most consumer drone batteries — a DJI Mini or Air pack, for instance — sit comfortably under 100 Wh, so no approval is needed. Larger cinema and FPV packs can cross into the 101–160 Wh band, which requires airline sign-off and caps you at two spares. Read the Wh printed on the battery; if it only shows mAh and volts, multiply volts × amp-hours (mAh ÷ 1,000 = Ah) to get watt-hours.
How to pack the batteries
- Remove batteries from the drone where practical, so a spare can’t be activated in transit and each cell can be inspected.
- Protect every terminal: original packaging, a dedicated LiPo case or fire-resistant bag, or tape over the contacts. No bare terminals loose in a bag.
- Storage charge: LiPo packs travel best at partial (storage) charge, not full — safer and better for the cell.
- Keep them in the cabin and reachable — many airlines now bar spare batteries and power banks from overhead bins so crew can respond to a fault fast.
Controllers, chargers, and accessories
The rest of the kit follows familiar rules. The remote controller is just an electronic device — carry-on or checked, though it’s easiest to keep it with the drone. Its own battery, if removable and lithium, is a spare and belongs in the cabin with the others. Chargers and cables have no restriction. A dedicated battery charging hub is fine, but you can’t recharge batteries in flight on many carriers now, so plan to arrive with what you need already charged.
Spare propellers, ND filters, and a gimbal guard pack anywhere. If you carry a lot of gear, a small checklist at the security line helps: drone out of the bag for X-ray, batteries in a protected case in the cabin, spare cartridges of any kind (some FPV pilots carry CO2 or gas tools) left at home. Keeping the batteries findable also lets you show an officer the Wh rating quickly if they ask about the larger packs.
The airline & international layer
TSA and the FAA set the US floor; airlines and other countries add their own limits, and lithium policy tightened sharply in 2025–2026. New ICAO rules effective 27 March 2026 restrict how spare batteries and power banks are carried worldwide — no recharging in flight, kept visible and accessible, and some carriers capping quantity. Airlines can also set their own spare-battery counts regardless of Wh.
Flying a drone into another country adds a second, non-TSA layer: many nations regulate drone import and operation separately — registration, permits, or outright bans. That’s a customs and aviation-authority question, not a screening one, but it can get your drone confiscated on arrival. Before an international trip, check both the airline’s dangerous-goods page (for the batteries) and the destination country’s drone rules (for the aircraft). At the checkpoint and the border alike, the official’s call is final.
