The scissors nuance

If your clippers come with small folding scissors, or you carry a separate pair of nail scissors, the rule to remember is the four-inch limit. TSA allows scissors in carry-on as long as the blades measure less than 4 inches from the pivot point. Nail and grooming scissors are almost always well under that, so they’re fine — but a full-size pair from a sewing kit may not be. Anything longer goes in checked baggage.

One real trap: if your nail clippers are built into a multi-tool or pocketknife that also has a knife blade, the whole thing is treated as a bladed weapon and won’t be allowed through the checkpoint. Standalone clippers are never a problem.

How to pack them

No special packing is required for nail clippers in either bag. If you want to keep the security line moving, tuck them in your toiletry pouch so they’re not a mystery shape on the X-ray. For checked bags, TSA asks that any genuinely sharp object — like long scissors — be wrapped so handlers don’t get cut, but ordinary clippers don’t need it.

Airlines and international rules

These are TSA rules for U.S. departures. Most other security authorities — the UK, EU, Canada, Australia — also permit nail clippers in the cabin, and airlines almost never add their own restriction on such a small grooming item. Rules abroad are broadly similar, but a handful of countries screen bladed items more strictly, so if you’re flying out of a foreign airport, check that country’s security authority before you pack.
