The verdict, in one line
Solid or stick deodorant goes in your carry-on with no size limit. Gel, roll-on, spray and aerosol deodorant are treated as liquids, so in a carry-on each container must be 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less and fit in your quart bag. Every kind of deodorant is fine in a checked bag.
Why the form of your deodorant is what matters
The TSA 3-1-1 rule limits liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes in the cabin to containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, all fitting inside one quart-size bag, one bag per passenger. A solid does not count. That single distinction is the whole answer for deodorant.
TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” tool splits deodorant into separate entries. Solid deodorant carries no volume restriction in either bag. Aerosol and liquid deodorant point back at the liquids rule: allowed in carry-on only up to 3.4 oz per container. So a normal push-up stick is not a liquid, but the moment your deodorant sprays, gels, or rolls on wet, it is one as far as the checkpoint is concerned.

How to pack it
If you only travel with a stick, you are done — drop it in your bag and don’t count it against your quart of liquids. If you use a spray, gel or roll-on and want to keep it in the cabin, buy a travel size of 3.4 oz or less and put it in the quart bag with your other liquids. Anything bigger should go in your checked bag, where there is no per-container size limit for toiletries.
One checked-bag caveat for aerosols: the FAA limits total toiletry aerosols to about 68 fl oz (2 L) per passenger, with each container capped near 17 fl oz (500 ml), and the spray nozzle must be protected by a cap. For a normal wash bag of deodorant and hairspray you will never come close to that ceiling.
Flying from the UK, EU or elsewhere
The EU and UK use the same 100 ml cabin limit for liquids, and solid deodorant is treated as a non-liquid there too. The UK is in the middle of a change: airports that have installed new CT scanners — including Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh and Birmingham — now allow liquid containers up to 2 litres in the cabin, while Manchester, Stansted, Luton and others still enforce 100 ml (per Which?, 2026). The catch is that a large liquid deodorant allowed at one airport can be refused on the return leg, so for the spray and gel forms the safe move on any international trip is still to travel-size it or check it.
Whatever the printed rule, the officer at the checkpoint always has the final say on any item and can refuse it.

Is stick deodorant limited to 3.4 oz in a carry-on?
